An open question

Today I had a delicious cup of orange-spiced red tea, and lo and behold, the tea bags were of the variety that has quotes attached. I enjoy such things, and so read the quote before unwinding after a day of paper-induced stress.

The quote? "Anything too stupid to be said is sung" - Voltaire (1697-1778)

At first I was semi-offended by this quote, saw it as an affront to music, and brushed off the slight sting before taking the first sip, but then it got me thinking. Song lyrics are a way to get across sentiments we wouldn't exactly express in everyday speech. Some lyrics, if said, would result in odd, awkward conversation snippets.

Can we come up with any fun examples?

Number 1

According to Billboard.com:

"This Is Why I'm Hot" by Mims is the new number 1 on the billboard hot 200. In fact, since the song went from 32-1 that makes it the third largest leap in the chart's history and the first No. 1 single for Capitol Records since 1992. The track bows atop the Hot Digital Songs chart with 135,000 downloads and trails only Kelly Clarkson's "A Moment Like This" (52-1) and Rihanna's "SOS" (34-1) for biggest jumps in the chart's history.

Mexican Polka

Awhile ago I wrote about El Barragas's band, which plays Musica Nortena. What is Musica Nortena?

Musica Nortena or Northern Music is popular in the northern states of Mexico. The states of Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon and Coahuila are the ones responsible for bringing forth this music. This music is characterized by borrowing the polka and waltz rhythm of Germany and Poland. German and Polish polka use woodwind instruments, a tuba for bass, and an accordion. Mexican polka switches some of the instruments. In Mexican polka, the accordion is still used for the lead instrument. This accordion is usually a diatonic and botton based. Diatonic basically means the accordion will play a note when the box is squeezed in and another when squeezed out. They do not use the woodwind instruments or the tuba, and very few brass instruments. Instead, they use a Bajo Sexto, which is a twelve-string Mexican guitar. This instrument is strummed through a piece of music to keep the time. As for a bass instrument, they used a double bass in the past and know use an electric bass guitar. Drums also fill in for musica nortena. Sometimes, a saxophone is used to play harmony along with the accordion. The bands are made up of a minimum four people.

Musica nortena is not just about playing polkas or waltzes. This type of music includes other rhythms like redovas, chotis, boleros, cumbas and huapangos. The one type of song and rhythm that gives musica nortena its signature trait is that of the Corrido. What is a corrido? A corrido is a song that tells a story, event, tragedy or a heroic event. The rhythm is characterized as a fast-paced waltz. Corridos dominate the the life of musica nortena. Most corridos were composed during the Mexican Revolution of 1910. Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata have many corridos that tell of their deeds and the way they died.

A special thanks for El Barragas for the information.

Dandelion Blow

Sometimes, it's easy to overlook an artist when they don't make a press release about a new album. This is unfortunate, as many amazing songs by artists have been soundtrack-only releases. Do you know "Neither Of Us Can See" by Incubus? How about "A320" by Foo Fighters? The first one is off Stealth and the second Godzilla. Tori Amos released "Carnival" specifically on the Mission: Impossible 2 soundtrack. Ask any Tori fan about this song, and many will shrug their shoulders.

Franz Ferdinand is joining these ranks with new song "Dandelion Blow," to be soundtracked on upcoming British movie Hallam Foe. Says Alex Kapranos on Franz Ferdinand's official MySpace page:

I've put a new song on this page. We wrote it a couple of months ago as a theme for a Scottish film called Hallam Foe, directed by David Mackenzie who directed Young Adam and Asylum. The title character is played by Jamie Bell who was the lead in Billy Elliot.

Sexual tension, voyeurism, dark humour, Scotland and death are themes of the film - all of which seem good ingredients for a song by the Ferdinand. Nick and I read the script and went to screenings of early edits in the Glasgow Film Theatre which gave us the ideas for the melody and lyrics. Other Domino artists appear on the soundtrack including Psapp, Unpoc and Sons & Daughters.

The film will be realeased some time this year and will be appearing at the Berlin Film Festival. There's a blog that has been kept by Colin Monie here http://www.getyourpeople.com/ if you want to read more.

Alex
The track is a departure from Franz's typical dance-rock sound and is more along the lines of their tracks such as "Eleanor Put Your Boots On". You can preview the new track on Franz Ferdinand's Official MySpace page.
