AtD Announces: The Notable Music Videos of 2006: Official Results Thread I

And now that moment you've all been waiting for, the results of our 2006 music video awards ! Before we get to that, however, here's how the whole shebang went down. I asked my fellow editors, RyTunes and Doughnutman, to pick their five favorite videos among all those that were nominated. Oh yeah, I picked mine too. Then we used a weighted scale system that gave our top choices more points than our bottom choices. The scale worked like this: 3 points for the number 5 video, 5 points for the number 4 video, 10 points for number 3, 25 points for numero dos, and a wallopin' 50 for first. Well, the math is done and AtD is proud to declare a winner in our first ever Editor's Choice Music Video Award:

Disturbed - Land of Confusion (click on the link for the YouTube video stream)

Disturbed's roaring cover of the 80's Genesis hit powered into first place with 65 points (1 1st place, 1 3rd place, and 1 4th place finish). This animated spectacle, which is directed by Spawn creator Todd McFarlane, serves as an appropriate and more brutal follow-up to its Reagan-era predecessor, serving as a commentary on current politics that is more shocking than satirical.

The runners up for our Editor's Choice Award:

Fort Minor - Where'd You Go (featuring Holly Brook)
30 Seconds to Mars - The Kill (Bury Me)

Each totaled 50 points with two individual first place finishes. The Kill also won an award at the MTV VMA's this past year, taking home the MTV2 Award at that ceremony. Finally an honorable mention to our 3rd place finisher:

OK GO - Here It Goes Again

The video that needs no introduction. It changed the rules for how music videos are marketed and shared. Another fine example of the Web 2.0 in action. What else can we say about the landmark success of this video? Over 9 million views on YouTube, Grammy nominated for Best Short Form Music Video, featured on the Colbert Report, performed live without error at the 2006 VMA's, and parodied in a Cingular Wireless commercial. But that's not all! There's a lot more comin' your way before we wrap up the year that was in music videos. Next, RyTunes and Doughnutman (not necessarily in that order) will share with you their thoughts and comments on the videos mentioned here, plus a few more that weren't. After that, I'll close it off with a few personal whimsies on what struck me and why, while also welcoming the next cadre of music videos that will blow our minds and destroy worlds in 2007. It should be a wild ride, don't go anywhere!

I disagree with you about here we go again. OK GO's album did not make the top 50 Albums sold. So why I just think it shows you that just because a video was viral doesn't make it good.

I removed my last post because it was not very integritous, and on a level inflammatory.

There are a few points I would like to make.

1. This was a democratic procedure. While you are welcome to disagree, you should respect our choices as we respect yours.

2. Record sales are not the issue here. The original idea, as it had been explained to me, was to judge a video solely on the video's merits.

3. Top 50 Lists are not necessarily indicative of quality music. Many artists make it to those lists because of marketability, and there are more factors to that than the quality of music. Furthermore, judging an artist's worth by said lists undermines the quality of bands who have not yet been signed, bands who are only beginning to get their foot in the door, and bands whose music can be good and not fit into the current trend. So to judge quality of an artist by a single factor - in this case record sales - is a fallacious endeavor.

And a further point is that if we're going to talk about popularity, then this needs to be considered. A band who jumps from obscurity to national mention should be considered a greater feat than an artist whose last album was a hit and then the next one makes #1 in its first week.

I had no idea who OK Go was before this video, and I'm sure I'm not alone. From a relatively unknown band to the lead singer taking a spot on a show coveted by national politicians says something. And every review I've read save for Hinder seems to enjoy this video. A video being viral doesn't make it good - but most people talking favorably about it does give it a push in the general direction of good.

More to the point, this was an editor's choice, and you are in the minority of editors who didn't see artistic merit in this video. It doesn't make your dislike of it any less valid, but this was a vote, not a debate, and the choices have been made.

I just wanted to hear an argument against my statement that there was nothing special about ok go it was just popular on the internet. I don't see anything wrong with that. I prefaced my comment with the words I disagree to emphasize that I was not attacking coz. No need to attack me.

Who said I didn't respect your choices? I was just asking for more information.

On your second point Coz wrote that the Music video increased sales, so it was a point of why he chose it.

no one ever said we were using one statistic. If that were true shakira hips don't lie, Justin Timberlake's sexy back and High School Musical would be out top three videos but they're not.

Lots of bands became popular because of their music video as it grants them more exposure then just radio play. Here is but a small list of bands I first heard through their music video:

Evanesence
Creed
12 Stones
Rock and Roll Soldiers
Hinder
Backstreet Boys
AFI

just to name a few.

Maybe I got a little heated, and I had no intention to attack you. I guess I read your comment as "OK Go shouldn't be nominated because the album didn't make Top 50 and you both made an awful choice based on this criterion", as if you were trying to posthumously argue it off the list. It's been a problem frequently where I've misinterpreted the tone of things you've said to be more abrasive than they are, and will try to work on that.

A few lines aside, I was just putting out some arguments. It was lengthy and a little gun-raising but I thought I made some valid points. And I agree with you about High School Musical and such.

Apologies for getting riled up.
